which he could hold, and receive his pension. He resigned when he was nearly seventy, and lived to be eighty-two and six months, and was buried in Portsmouth cemetery.

The Government in 1848 made 'reparation for a long neglect in the granting medals, when he received one with four bars, and meeting an old admiral with whom he sailed when a midshipman, was asked by him how many bars he had, told him four, and that of the actions with the Milan, in which they were taken, and the Guillaume Tell, which they captured, no notice was taken. He said "Write to the Admiralty, and state your case, and I will write also." He received two more bars. The third, the capture of the Topiaze, though off the Island of Guadaloupe, was included in the operations against Martinique.

He only wore it a few times, on anniversaries. On one occasion, whilst returning from a walk, he was stopped by some soldiers and hailed as "The Old Warrior ! "
