And it was Winter
-
From There Go the Ships
by George Shirley

Is it cold without? How sad if cold and icy within! Cold and icy hearts, no love - oh, how chilling! Why, it is the emblem of death. The trees and plants look as if they were dead; and what a true picture of many, "dead in trespasses and sins." Soon will the sun gain strength, shining stronger and stronger, and will soon drive away the cold. So may the Great Sun of Righteousness rise with power. Oh, let the warmth of His love melt all your coldness and fill your hearts with warmth.

The sun in the Arctic regions is seen for three months and then absent for three months. All is ice and snow; hence it is called the "Land of the midnight sun." From this desolate scene let us lift up our thoughts to the region where " the sun never sets." "No night there;" a river of pleasure ever flowing, never frozen; an ocean of felicity that can never be exhausted a day without a night; a spring without a winter; pure, unmingled, spiritual, never-ending felicity.
