We proceeded to Syracuse, arrived and rigged a jury mast, sailed for Palermo, where we heard the sad news that the Queen Charlotte was burnt off the island of Gorgona, a great number of the crew being either burnt or drowned, Lord Keith being on shore at the time. We then sailed with Lord Nelson, as we must call him, Sir William Hamilton, his lady, with all luggage, on board for Leghorn, who were going to England overland. At Leghorn the last I saw of my chieftain, whom I little expected I should ever see again ; as brave a man as ever trod the deck of an English man-of-war, and the enthusiasm with which he ever seemed to inspire his officers and men was incredible.
