speak, never stifle it. The first wrong thing you do it will speak. A boy has got upon a chair during the absence of his mother to reach the jam pot in the cupboard; he hears the handle of the door rattle. How sharp he gets down; how the colour comes into his face. He looks quite confused. Why ? That is conscience speaking. The other day I took hold of a piece of black hot iron, thinking it was cold, but it burnt my thumb and finger; the skin was quite dead, and I could not feel. If you do not listen to conscience it will not speak so loud next time; and if you continue to refuse to hear it, its voice will be gradually hushed, and by-and-by |
