not speak at all. Don't let your conscience be stifled, scared, but ever listen to its voice.

At the Nile expedition, the box where the compass was fixed in the boats was painted with white phosphoric paint, which took in the light during the day, and gave it out at night, so the position of the needle could always be seen, and the boats steered aright. Let the light of God's Word ever shine on your conscience, your compass, and you will not mistake the way it points. Follow it.

When about seven years of age I sailed from Sheerness to Portsmouth, and somewhere off the Sussex coast the master and the mate at night had different opinions about a light shown by a light ship moored on a sand. It was thought safest to anchor for the night. Being in bed, in a bunk as it is called, a sort of a big cupboard into which you crawl through a hole, and when inside there is plenty of room to lay down, and no fear of falling out. I remember as vividly as if it was only yesterday the gentle ripple of the water against the side of the vessel close to my ear. They were talking very quietly, so I sat up and peeped at them. They had the table spread over with charts, and were looking for the lightships and sands, - for these are all marked down in the charts, - the depth of the water, what kind of bottom, and all the information necessary. Don't forget the chart! The Bible is the chart, where all the rocks and sands are marked down; all the line of the coast is shown; where the lighthouses are; what. kind of lights they show; where the lightships are moored
