This chapter continues the theme that gains in human rights and freedom perversly adds to poverty. It tells us how reducing the working week from 72 hours had led to Britain no longer being able to compete with the European's longer working week. How a well intentioned Act of Parliament had led to 20,000 looms being idle in Bradford, causing the very human suffering the act was supposed to prevent. The French could purchase wool in London, ship it abroad to spin it, then ship it back to Bradford for 3d to 4d per pound less than the home spun.
